EducationTerpenesWhat are Cannabis Terpenes & Their Benefits?

What are terpines?

Terpenes are a class of organic compounds produced by many plants, including conifers, herbs, and citrus trees which create the pleasant fragrances and aromas given off by many beneficial plants, fruits, and vegetables.

Cannabis plants produce at least 200 terpenes, many of which have been found to provide therapeutic health benefits, especially when combined with cannabinoids such as THC or CBD in full-spectrum cannabis products.

What are the benefits of “full spectrum” CBD products?

Full spectrum refers to cannabis products containing all the compounds available in the hemp plant, which includes cannabinoids (THC, CBD, CBG etc), terpenes, and flavonoids.

Most consumers who use full-spectrum products cite the “entourage effect” – where plant compounds like terpenes increase the effectiveness of cannabinoids – as one of the main reasons why they use full-spectrum CBD products.

Cannabis Terpines & the “Entourage Effect”

The “entourage effect” is one of the reasons why full-spectrum products might be more effective at producing the many benefits that cannabinoids and terpines combined are known for.

The entourage effect is the idea that similar molecules, those that occur together naturally, interact in more useful ways, and applies to the terpenes and cannabinoids found in both marijuana (THC) and industrial hemp (CBD) plants.

As molecular compounds, terpenes occur naturally and often manifest themselves as natural oils, each accompanied by a unique viscosity and aroma.

Cannabinoids (like CBD) and terpenes work in synergy to maximize the benefits of the compounds in the body. Patient-based and lab studies show that CBD products with strong terpene profiles often create far better outcomes when used in combination.

This glossary provides a snapshot of the botanical and cannabis-derived terpenes found in cannabis products and their known unique medicinal and therapeutic benefits.
